“Paul has a warning for the church – don’t be deceived”…
We’ll see these things that threaten to take our attention to our pure devotion to Christ and I pray that we’ll be encouraged to have a pure devotion..
In chapter 10 Paul dealt with these false apostles and here today we said he uses language that comes back to the false apostles in an almost mocking way. The false apostles came with another picture of the gospel and another Jesus. We pointed to Galatians 1:8
8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
And so these false apostles are preaching another Jesus – in what way:
An easy Jesus:
- A Jesus who doesn’t require much.
- A Jesus who works for you, and who isn’t “lord” but it’s cool with the things you’re cool with.
- A non challenging Jesus, maybe.
What Do We Do
We looked to Romans:
17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.
They’re not to entertain the false apostles, and we’re not either. What do we do as a peope in a culture that may entertain false pictures of the gospel, churches that paint life with Christ as a financial transactions, we need to navigate that carefully. This life and this world isn’t agnostic, it’s spiritual. And there is a kingdom on earth that isn’t God’s it’s contrary to God. We need to be aware of that, and treat the gospel with clarity and a sharpness that protects God’s people and protects the gospel, His power to salvation.
